Desks
As my loyal readers (reader?) know, I cannot stand my current desk. It is a cheap computer desk with an attached hutch which I cannot remove. In desgining my new room, I have the perfect space for a desk, about three and a half feet between the foot of my bed and the wall facing a window. I do not want to waste that space with the desk I have now because I've never been able to fit what I want on it. Therefor, I'm considering building my own desk. One issue that I've noticed with the space is that if done incorrectly, my desk would block the only airvent in the room. That would not be good for me, I would have to buy a fan if that happened, something I'd rather not do.
Now, I've never done any real construction before. I know & have my basic tools - exluding power tools. A desk is probably among the simplest things to build. I need legs for support and a top. Maybe I'll become ambitious and add an attachment for the keyboard. A few nails here and there and I should have a desk, right?
I'm nowhere near this ambitious, however I've been looking online a bit to figure out what I could build it out of. This one is pretty neat - I like the use of fence post & Klee Klamps as opposed to welding. http://sim.plified.com/2008/08/17/how-to-build-a-custom-ergonomic-comput...
How Stuff Works (dot com) has schematics for a generic desk which shouldn't be too difficult to simplify down to what I want. http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-build-furniture2.htm
Of course, the closest to what I want and probably the best looking one that I've found is from http://www.computer-desk-assembly.com/design.htm. I might omit the monitor stand - that's too much like the hutch for me to consider it. The last page of that tutorial had links to other projects which inspired the creator - one is made of particle board with lots of polyurethane, that's a possibility. Added up to something like $20 according to that person. Maybe I'll build the first out of particleboard.
tl;dr: I want a desk. I don't want to buy a desk because they're never what I want. Anyone have a drill or want to help?
If anyone wants to try and talk me out of this or help me build it - just comment or email me - matt@theartofnerd.com
P.S. I forgot to say, I'm really interested in combining the Klee Klamp idea with the particle board. I would build the frame out of pipes so that I don't block the airflow and then attach the top.
